How cultural experiences can improve health and wellbeing

Kate Whitehead

Kate’s work is a protest against the way textiles are consumed in western society. Kate is rebelling against a world in which clothes are produced and thrown away without thought to the consequences; where the fashion industry and media impose identities. Kate’s work is about going back to slower processes, embracing tradition, salvaging the discarded and fixing the broken.

Kate uses weaving and embroidery to explore the potential of the forgotten, overlooked and abandoned. kate enjoys discovering humble, quiet fabrics like calicos and cottons; the more worn, faded and story-laden the better; and giving them a second chance. She imagines the history of every piece, exploring its hues and tones, examining its tears and frays and weighing up its foibles.

Kate has worked with the Whitworth and Age Friendly Manchester on the Handmade project which provides a series of craft workshops for older people.
